Background :: Himalayan IT Education Project

I think most probably that this [internet] technology will be helpful, to get information easily. In that way it will make clear what is truth, what is reality and what is false propaganda. I think that provided each individual uses their own intelligence or mind to investigate further, this technology should be very useful.
— His Holiness the Dalai Lama
The web fosters "a society that could advance with intercreativity and group intuition rather than conflict as the basic mechanism ..." "Let's use the Web to help people understand each other."
— Tim Berners-Lee (inventor of the World Wide Web)
"Information technology is the strongest means to propagate the Tibetan cause to the outside world."
— Tibetan student

The Idea

The idea for this project was first germinated by young educated Tibetans as a benefit to their settlement, Ravangla, Sikkim. As they were working on making it a reality, they were talking with people in surrounding areas, and found many others with similar needs and ideas. The concepts of the project were greeted with enthusiasm everywhere, and so it was decided to expand it as much as possible.

A dream like this would not have been possible in the past, as recently as four years ago! Only now have the following IT resources exploded in the Himalayan areas:

  • Internet connection is now good in India, and is entirely possible in remote areas. Even if wired connection is not feasible, there is internet through GPRS phone, satellite, and wireless mesh.
  • The level of computer and IT awareness has spread rapidly, and there are many now hungry to learn.
  • The level of IT knowledge has spread rapidly, and there are many now willing and able to teach.
  • There are excellent books and magazines, and reasonably priced.
  • There are excellent online tutorials, references, and materials.
  • Any person can work remotely from anywhere — as many already are, all over the world.
