Himalayan IT Education

ZomZom Ravangla IT Education

Mission statement

The remote settlement of Ravangla in Sikkim, India, will set up a permanent business cum education training program in Information Technology (IT) in the settlement.

Background

The settlement lacks many realistic options for developing a livelihood, and the number of unemployed youths is increasing. See background details about Ravangla settlement.

IT education and business would be a viable option to create a knowledge-based economy. It will empower the local Tibetan people and reduce the digital divide between the wired elite Tibetan living in the cities and the unwired Tibetan masses in the remote areas.

To implement this, we will invite experts on IT and business skills from India, and volunteers from abroad, to train the youths. Once the trainees get trained, the knowledge will be recycled and given back to new trainees in the settlement, thus generating a continuous cycle of education.

The experience and the expertise of the Ravangla settlement will be offered to other remote Tibetan settlements and can be replicated as a model of empowerment and development. In the longer run, the expertise will be carried to Tibet when Tibetans in exile will return to Tibet after a political solution.

Objectives

  • To train the people of Ravangla to become computer-literate, and provide Information Technology (IT) and language skills to the youth.
  • To enable and empower the youths to become productive persons in the society and thereby play positive and contributing roles.
  • To create a knowledge-based economy in this particular settlement, wherein the youths will choose to stay in the settlement rather than going to cities seeking opportunities.

Why IT Education in Ravangla?

Since Ravangla lacks many realistic options for developing a livelihood, IT businesses would be a viable solution for the settlement. IT business can be anywhere! ... more
