Himalayan IT Education

Description: Ravangla IT Education

The Ravangla IT Education program will be held in two phases starting in December 2007. The first phase will extend for six weeks, and the second to one year.

First Phase

The first phase of the program will be held from 15 December 2007 to 15 February 2008. This will be an intensive workshop teaching computer fundamentals and introducing advanced skills, from office applications, to web development, programming, hardware, networking, graphics and multimedia.

There will be three categories.

  • Basic skills: office applications, printing, email, using the internet, searching for information, etc.
  • Introduction to specific applications, such as Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Pagemaker etc.
  • Intro to very basic programming: HTML (because it shows how the internet works) and perhaps introduction to a programming language

At the end of the first phase, the students will know the basics of using a computer in any 'office'-type job, e.g. in a call-center, or as a secretary, or as a help in further studies also other then computer studies.

Second Phase

The second phase will start immediately after the first. Students would choose one of three directions:

  • web programming and software development — to work as software developers, and/or carry on to higher studies.
  • System administration — Internet security, networking, hardware, operating systems, (for example how to connect a new printer and share it on the network, set up DHCP and DNS servers, backup and recovery) — they could run Internet cafes, sell computer parts and services.
  • Multimedia, Graphic design, and web design.

The second phase will be a year-long duration, which will be carried out with the help of a professional Tibetan instructor, who will do follow-up training with the participants of the first workshop. In this year period, more western volunteers, expert in specific fields, will be teaching at regular intervals.

VolunteerTibet.org, based in Dharamsala, has agreed to assist us in finding qualified volunteers.

With the help of the trainees, we will also launch an Adult Computer Literacy program for the adult population of the settlement.

During this phase, the Director of the RITE Centre will start looking for business opportunities in Ravangla.

After the second phase, people in Ravangla will take independent responsibility of the IT education project. They will no longer need monetary support for further training and equipment because they will generate money y putting up cybercafes, selling computer services, etc., in Ravangla and in Gangtok. This will be a period when they have already started looking for IT business opportunities in Gangtok, in addition to running a continuous IT training program in Ravangla.
